Apple Maps on the web just got a lot better
It took Apple a while to bring its maps app to the web, but they finally did it with a new feature called Look Around. This feature is similar to Google Maps’ Street View, which allows users to get a 360-degree view of a location by clicking on a precise spot on the map. However, Apple’s Look Around is not available everywhere, but it’s still a useful tool for exploring a location in more detail. The feature works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, and can be accessed through Apple Maps.
What a NASA spacecraft saw at a robots grave from orbit
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter recently captured images of the defunct Mars InSight lander on Oct. 23, 2024. The new images show red dust piling up on the lander’s solar panels, which are now caked with dirt. Despite the fact that InSight retired in December 2022 and engineers hoped it might wake up and be able to collect sunshine again, they haven’t heard a peep from the spacecraft. NASA will stop listening for radio signals from InSight as of the end of 2024. The images also capture the incredibly turbulent nature of dust storms on Mars, which can blow accumulating dirt off of solar panels and create dust devils that make funnel-like chimneys. Scientists have long known the hazards of dust devils churning up Martian dirt, but they are learning about how much of it gets blown away by gusts and dust devils. And knowing how long it takes for dust to cover craters will help scientists date the collisions that caused them. The information is important as NASA prepares future missions to Mars.
