Hackers Can Jailbreak Digital License Plates to Make Others Pay Their Tolls and Tickets

Digital license plates are already legal in some states and can be used nationwide. They offer several benefits over traditional sheet metal license plates, such as the ability to change the display on the fly or flag a stolen car. However, security researcher Josep Rodriguez has discovered a vulnerability that allows drivers to jailbreak the plates and change their license plate number at will, potentially evading traffic tickets and tolls. This could also be used to impersonate another driver and receive their tickets and toll bills. Additionally, jailbroken license plates can use the plates’ features, such as GPS tracking, without paying the monthly subscription fee. Reviver, the company selling these plates, has not yet patched this issue and may need to replace the chips in each display to fix it.

Big Tech Will Scour the Globe in Its Search for Cheap Energy

The demand for electricity to power generative AI has led to a new boom industry in Malaysia, with Microsoft committing over $2 billion to build an AI data center. The tech giants are now looking for cheap and reliable power as the need for AI applications continues to grow. This has created opportunities for countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Chile to compete for the business of data centers. Tax breaks and preferential rates for buying land and access to power are popular in some US states, while Green Lane Pathway initiatives have been implemented in Malaysia to expedite construction approvals. The extent to which this shift in global influence will be profound is unclear, but it is likely that the data centers that take these algorithms to market will be a low-margin business. To sustain their advantage, countries capitalizing on this moment should focus on building enduring innovation ecosystems that can thrive long after the “electricity rush” subsides.
