NYT Strands hints, answers for December 14

Strands is a word search game that requires players to find words in a grid of letters that can be connected horizontally or vertically, but also change direction. The theme for each puzzle is linked by a spangram, which is a special word or phrase that summarizes the day’s theme and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically. The game provides an opaque hint and does not provide the word list, making it a brain-teasing game that takes longer to play than other games like Wordle and Connections. If you’re stuck, Mashable has all the NYT Strands hints for today’s puzzle. Today’s theme is “Nothing can stop me!” and the spangram answer is “GoGetter.”

Creating a Global Package to Solve the Problem of Plastics

The United Nations reports that plastic production has increased from 2 million metric tons in 1950 to over 400 million in 2024, with only 10% being recycled and reused. This will lead to a significant increase in plastic pollution by the end of the century, contaminating the environment and potentially harming human health. In response, policymakers are negotiating a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty that aims to address the full lifecycle of plastics, from design to production to disposal. The treaty includes two options: ending plastic pollution or protecting human health and the environment from plastic pollution. While option one is defended by countries like Rwanda and Peru, major oil producers Saudi Arabia prefer option two, which focuses on recycling and waste management rather than production. The United States has also recently shifted its policy to support limits on plastic production. Agreeing on option one would set the ambitious goal of ending plastic pollution, while option two is a more vague aim that may not be achievable in the near future. However, both options provide the necessary steer for the plastic industry to develop better technologies, such as fully biodegradable and compostable materials, and improved recycling processes. The success of the Global Plastics Treaty will depend on the industry’s ability to develop these technologies quickly enough to meet the ambitious goals set by the treaty.
