Russian Spies Jumped From One Network to Another Via Wi-Fi in an Unprecedented Hack

For determined hackers, using radio equipment to breach a target’s Wi-Fi network has been an effective but risky technique. However, a Russian military intelligence agency’s unit of hackers has developed a new and safer technique: they use a laptop in a neighboring building with an antenna to remotely hack into the target’s Wi-Fi network without leaving Russian soil. This technique was discovered by cybersecurity researcher Steven Adair, who worked for Volexity and tied it to the Russian hacker group known as Fancy Bear, APT28, or Unit 26165. The group has been involved in notorious cases such as the breach of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and the botched Wi-Fi hacking operation in which four of its members were arrested in the Netherlands in 2018. In this case, Volexity discovered that the Russian hackers had jumped to the target network via Wi-Fi from a different compromised network across the street, and that this prior breach had also potentially been carried out over Wi-Fi from yet another network in the same building. This is an interesting attack vector that has not been seen before.

The Website of Old YouTube Clips That Feels Like a Gut Punch

The internet has always been a dynamic and ever-changing entity, but nostalgia for its past is still a popular topic among some users. One such user is Riley Walz, an engineer from San Francisco who created a website called “IMG 0107” that pulls videos uploaded to YouTube using the iPhone’s “Send to YouTube” feature. The website features videos with names in the format “IMG_XXXX,” which are remnants of a bygone era when people were still learning about the capabilities of their smartphones and house music was entering its Coachella bro phase.

Walz’s site is not just any ordinary collection of videos, but rather a single-serving site that speaks to the current yearning for a bygone digital era. The website has gained popularity among some users who are nostalgic for the lost internet and want to recreate the Twitter of circa 2009 before it was awash in slurs and trolls.

The future of archiving the internet is uncertain, with sites like Internet Archaeology gone and the Wayback Machine limited in its ability to capture the feeling of online interactions. However, nostalgia for the old internet remains a popular pastime among some users, with sites like BuzzFeed still running listicles of internet memories and Reddit serving up old feeds.

Scientists watch hardcore object blasting energy beams into space

The “Guitar Nebula” is a rapidly spinning pulsar that is blasting a 12-trillion-mile-long beam of energized particles and energy into space. The pulsar, which is located in the constellation Cepheus, is surrounded by a colossal guitar-shaped cloud made of hydrogen gas. This cloud, called a nebula, formed when particles shooting out from the pulsar blew gaseous bubbles over eons, ultimately amassing into the great cloud. The “Guitar Nebula” is located some 2,700 light-years from Earth and is visible in X-ray and optical images. Pulsars make themselves known to us by the two jets of energized particles emanating from their poles, which are produced by the particles rapidly moving around the neutron stars’ potent magnetic fields. The fastest known pulsar spins at some 716 times per second and sometimes, two neutron stars collide, a dramatic event that can produce the most enigmatic object in the universe - a black hole, a realm so gravitationally powerful, not even light can escape.
